Third Day in Berlin...

Today we rode a bus to church. Tom knew right
where it was because he attended church in this building
when he was here on his mission.

Not only that, he and the other elders help build this
building. It was nostalgic for him to come back. The elders
who are serving here now where taken back when Tom told
them this story. He understood the entire Sacrament meeting.

After church we took the bus up to a memorial that we
wanted to see earlier but didn't have time.
This is part of the Berlin wall that is part of the
Topography of Terror.

East Berliners thought all they had to do to escape was to
somehow get over the wall. But what they didn't
realize is that on the other side of the wall was a
stretch of ground they had to run across to get to a barbwire
fence which had guard houses. They never made it to the fence
because the guards would shot them.
The picture below on the left is the wall, then the guard tower
and on the far right is the wire fence they tried to get to.

But the other thing in this particular part, under ground
Hitler had a building that housed the
Gestapo.
As we walked through the memorial is was very quiet.

We then walked towards the Brandenburg Gate through the
"modern" part of the city. It is a real contrast to the buildings
we saw yesterday on our tour.

This is what the Brandenburg Gate looked like
when Tom was here in the early 70's.

Today it is quite different.

We were crazy, but we really wanted to experience how
the German's were going to cheer for their soccer team.
They were expecting over 500,000 people, but they had
several large screens set-up to accommodate the crowd.
We got there early enough though to be next to the
main screen on the backside of the Brandenburg Gate.
Yes, and soon after this picture the skies opened up and
poured, but it didn't stop the partying.

Currywursts are a specialty and we had to try them.
They are cut-up brats in a curry/catsup. They are so good.

I thought these drink stations were so interesting. Of course
most of them were alcoholic based.

This ferris wheel was just down from the main plaza. The
individual buckets spin around as the wheel turns.  This
is another screen that will be showing the game.

The food here is to good to pass up. These are sandwiches
and other things you find in vendors everywhere.
The Germans love their bread and cheese.
I could so live here.

Then to top it all off, the ice cream is to die for.
You can't see it very well, but on the right just before
the green ice cream is the dark/chocolate.
OMGoodness it was so good.

Tomorrow we leave Berlin and head to Goslar.
